What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes excessive sweating, far more than what the body needs to regulate temperature. It often affects the hands, feet, underarms, or face, even when you’re not hot or exercising.

Excessive, uncontrollable, chronic, genetic sweating disorder. Many more people are not diagnosed but need help with their excessive sweating. Over 385 million people worldwide have hyperhidrosis.

Research shows around 5% of people worldwide experience Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. That’s over 385 million people dealing with daily challenges from unwanted sweat.

Understanding sweat

Sweat is vital for our body, acting as our body's built in cooling system, to prevent us from overheating.

Our body comprises of two types of Sweat Glands:

  • The Eccrine glands - found almost everywhere on the body, concentrated on palms, soles and head. They releases a watery fluid released via a pore of the skin - They helps cool our body down and control body temperature.
  • The Apocrine glands - are found in the underarms and anogenital region. These release a thicker milky substance rich in protein via the hair follicle. They contribute to body odour when coming into contact with bacteria on the skins surface.

Hyperhidrosis & excessive sweating is caused due to these sweat glands being overactive and producing more sweat than needed.

Types of hyperhidrosis

This is split in two categories, Primary Focal and Secondary Generalised.

Primary focal

This is caused due to the eccrine glands becoming overactive due to faulty nerve signals. There is no medical cause for this and it can run in families.

This type of sweating affects certain areas of the body such as the Underarms (Auxillary), Hands (Palmar), Feet (Plantar), Head & Face (Craniofacial).

Secondary generalised

This type of sweating is caused by underlying medical conditions or a side affect of medications. This is usually known as “Secondary Sweating”. This type of sweating may cause sweating across the whole body.

Interesting FACTS

Hyperhidrosis affects 4.8% of the population.

  • 88% of sufferers say their excessive sweating has either stayed the same or became worse over time.
  • 65% say Hyperhidrosis is an issue, whatever the season or weather.

Hyperhidrosis is more common than autism, psoriasis and peanut allergies, but due to stigma and embarrassment is rarely talked about. In some people, the body’s mechanism for cooling itself is so overactive that they may sweat four or five times more than is necessary or normal.

Whilst Hyperhidrosis is a physical condition, it can also take a toll on your confidence and mental wellbeing.

Many people find it too embarrassing to talk about and end up struggling in silence.

But you don’t have to. Opening up to a doctor, friend or family member can really help, not just for reassurance but to find ways to manage it and start feeling more comfortable in your own skin.

You’re not alone in this, and talking about it is the first step toward feeling better.

How sweat guard works?

Our Sweat Guard antiperspirants work effectively in stopping excessive sweating because of the high strength of the active ingredients and its unique formulation.

Unlike aluminium chloride - based antiperspirants, our innovative formulation ensures you are protected against sweat but without the skin irritation common with other products.

Each Sweat Guard antiperspirant is uniquely formulated using the main ingredients: AZG aluminium zirconium tetrachlorhydrex gly, aqua, alcohol dent, glycerin, hydroxyethylcellulose and triethanolamine.
